Questions
Answers for the first week
The ones people ask in the first week. If yours is not here, write to me.
At the start
Someone I love was just arrested. What do I do first?
Find out where they are being held and what the charge is, then call me. Do not discuss the case with them over a jail phone, because those calls are recorded.
Do I have to answer the police's questions?
You can politely say that you want a lawyer before you answer anything. Doing so is your right, and it is never a sign of guilt.
Will you take my case?
If it is a drug charge, a theft charge or a juvenile matter, very likely. Otherwise I will say so right away and point you to a lawyer I trust.
In court
What happens at the first court date?
Usually the court reads the charge, confirms who your lawyer is and sets the next date. It is short and it can feel overwhelming. I will tell you ahead of time what to expect.
Do I have to go to every hearing?
Often, yes, and missing one can create a new problem. Some hearings I can attend without you. I will tell you each time which kind it is.
Can you promise a result?
No lawyer honestly can. I can tell you what I see in the evidence and what each choice could cost you, and I will keep telling you as the case changes.
Fees
How much will this cost?
It depends on the charge and how far the case goes. I put the fee in writing at the first meeting, before you sign anything, and I tell you what is and is not included.
Can I pay over time?
Often, yes. Tell me what is realistic for your household and we will work out a schedule that is written down.
Still unsure? Write to me
Tell me in a few lines what you are facing. I will tell you honestly whether I can help.
